My guide shows quick actions you can take using free tools and apps. No tech-smarts required. Written by a senior just like you.
1) Start small: pick a comfortable writing space
- Aim for a quiet, well-lit spot and a large-font screen view.
- Zoom text in your browser or increase system font size so you can read comfortably while typing.
If you are anything like myself, your eyesight might not be what is used to be. Using zoom or increasing font size has helped me dramatically, and it might help you.
2) Use a simple writing tool to get words down
- Google Docs (free, web-based) or LibreOffice Writer (free desktop).
- Clean interface, autosave, big fonts.
- Tip: set font to 14–18pt and increase line spacing for easier reading.
By using simple writing tools, you can overcome any obstalces preventing you from getting started.
3) Turn on speech-to-text when typing is tiring
- Google Docs → Tools → Voice typing (works in Chrome) or your computer’s built-in dictation.
- Speak your thoughts and the tool types them — great for low energy days or hand strain.
Google Docs with voice typing not only gives you a break from typing, It will also become your best friend in a very short time.

- Grammarly (free) browser extension or the built-in spellcheck in Google Docs/LibreOffice.
- Write first, then run the checker. Accept simple suggestions (spelling, basic grammar). Don’t feel you must accept every style suggestion — keep your voice.

- Hearing your words helps catch awkward phrasing, missing words, and pacing problems. Read one paragraph at a time and edit as you listen.
Before I was using text-to-speech, I would read my content outloud. This become difficult for me, so I am now using text-to-speech instead. Listening to someone else reading my article is extremely helpful.
